The 2017 Under 19s State team

Dear readers

I am a bit late but here is the latest info re the 2017 WA Under 19s state team.

Last year was a succssful year for the state team despite us having to borrow 3 girls from NSW.

A few of the players from last year will be competing again this year.

There is talk of triple crowns in the Individuals. That will be exciting.

The players selected are:

Boys:

Ying Xiang Lin
Kai Chen Teoh
Sunyee Zheng
Jasper Tan
Jason Lee

All the boys were in last year's Bronze winning state team.
Xiang and KC were of course 1st and 2nd in the singles. Xiang also won the mens doubles and the Mixed silver.
Jasper was a giant killer in the mixed doubles  kicking out the top seeds in the QTRS.
Sunyee and Jason  were instrumental in the team event and will do so again this year.

Girls:

Alicia Xu
Anjali Bhujun
Syin Yu Choong
Divya Angusamy
Phoebe Ooi (NSW)

Alicia has been in a few states team always punching above her weight and age. She competed in the Under 15s last year and that gives an indication of her age.

Anjali is in her 2nd state team, I think and we wish her all the best. She is a rising star in the WA state team.

The other 2 girls are in their first state team and must be excited. I am sure they will give their best for WA.

Phoebe helped the WA team to get 3rd place last year. Her family and her are a delight. She is still young but will carry her own weight.

Coach: Eric Loh. Eric coached an Under 15s team a few years ago but has never travelled with a team. This should be an exciting trip for him. Eric has coached some of the boys privately before he was appointed. His knowledge of the player's strengths will help WA.

Manager: Padma Thiruvadi.  This is her first manager's position and I can tell she will excel as she has the team at her heart. I bet she is a great cook too. I have seen her watching her daughter every time her daughter trains. Anjali should be very glad that mum is going to manage the team. I bet her dad is also in the background doing work for the team as their family live for badminton. Hmmm! does that remind you of another family?

Being a manager is a thankless task but we do it for our children. Just remember to tell the players to thank the adults who contribute in any way towards the team.

Umpire: Bradley Chen. I think this is the first time Bradley is travelling as an Umpire. It will be an eye opener.

I still remember the reason my wife Annie became an umpire was because the WA state team was bullied in our first family's attendance at a national tournament. I think that was the under 15s tournament when Tyz was 12 years old. My god, how long ago was that. The team did not have an umpire and we had to use a Vic umpire who was not very favourable to the WA team. She was also chastised by the umpire for cheering the players and asked to leave the court.

Annie then decided to become an umpire and subsequently did many tournaments while Jazton and Tyzton were competing.

I had the honour of accompanying her to take the umpire exams and qualifying. I also have the honour of not having umpired a tournament since graduating.

The uniforms sponsor is Maxx thanks to Sok Teoh.

The team has been training since mid May.

This year the tournament is in South Australia.

This Sunday, there was the Presidents Cup.

This is a challenge that is done before the players leave for their tournament.

I understand the WA team lost after a close fight at 8/11.

I do not have the full names of the President's team but they included William Thwe, Anthony Kominikos, Milain, Berneice Teoh, Daniel Fan and Paris. These are volunteers and we should thank them for giving the WA team their practice under tournament conditions.

We wish the Under 19s team the best for the nationals.
