The final day of individuals

Dear readers

The event has drawn to a close.

KC attempted to win a triple crown but was thwarted by Peter Yan.

KC lost to Peter in the singles going down 21/15 and 21/14. He must be disappointed.

Ryan Tan also lost his plate event to R Agostino in 2 sets.

We had no one in the girls singles finals.

In the Mix, KC and K Xu lost to Peter Yan and Maggie Chen in 2 sets.

Jason Lee and Bernice managed a 3 set plate win against E Chen and A Aronsiri.

KC got his first gold partnering Peter Yan against R Audley and R Venpin in 2 easy sets.

Jason and Sunyee also managed a plate medal winning Marcus and Ryan Tan.

We had no one in the girls doubles but Jasmine and Janice tried to get a plate medal. They were not successful losing to K Ea and M Zhao.

That was the end of the tournament for all the players. WA did not do very well in the individuals this year. Maybe next year will be better as a few can still play in the Under 19s

This is the end of state championships for many of the boys. WA is thankful to the team for giving their best. We wish them the best in their coming exams.

Marcus won a 3 setter against K Gardner in the plate before losing to I Ong.

Bernice lost to K Ea in 2 sets in the plate.

Anjali also lost in 2 sets to C Tan in the plate.

KC and K Xu will play D Han and N Kuhanddha tomorrow in the Qtrs.

Gavin Ong and Alicia are out of the plate losing in 3 sets to T Mui and A Lowe.

Jason and Bernice progress to the next stage of the plate after winning against M Sojan and R Thomas.

Marcus and Anjali are also out of the plate after losing to T Gren and T Thiessen.

KC and P Yan will meet E Chen and P Souksavat tomorrow in the semis. Jason and Sunyee bowed out after losing to R Audley and R Venpin.

Jason and Sunyee will play G Ong and I Ong in the plate tomorrow.

In the GD plate, Bernice and Alicia lost to K EA and M Zhao in 3 sets. The twins are in the semis against Y Duhig and A Haider tomorrow.

Alicia is also trying her best in the qtrs singles tomorrow.

Prize giving photos

Dear readers

Here are some great photos from Gee Boon who is Ryan's dad. Irene and Gee Boon have been a rock solid support for Ryan Tan. I always make it a point to remind Ryan to thank his parents for all they do for him in badminton.

So should it be for all the players who have the great support from their parents. I am sure Teck Hin and Diana are glad their daughters have now got a state team medal. One of the strongest parental support comes from Sok Teoh who is always there for Bernice and KC. They better thank their dad too.

Likewise Anjali's and Alicia's parents are always supportive of their daughter. I have also often seen how much Marcus, Sunyee and Jason's parents doteon their child, supporting them all the way.

Without the parents, there is no state player and no state team. Go go parents.

Ryan Lin also has to be thanked for always being there as a coach for any state team. He has been a backbone for WA. Do not forget our President and Umpire Lily. She is always supportive of the WA players. Thanks.

In this trip, we also had Paul Kong who is Ryan Tan's personal coach. He was also Tyzton's personal coach. Thanks Paul for supporting WA state team.

WA fight for Bronze

Dear readers

It was a nailbiter bronze fight. I had been following the results on tournament software.

Ryan and KC lost in 3 sets just like Bernice and Janice. Luckily Sunyee and Ryan won their singles in 2 sets bringing WA closer to bronze.

Janice fought another 3 setter and had to concede. She will have given all for WA.

Likewise Sunyee had a 3 setter and lost the final set on deuce. Jason also lost a 3 setter against I Ong. Both players will have played their hearts out for WA.

At 1 stage WA was 2 sets behind. In between my client interviews , I was following the game on youtube.

Bernice and KC also fought their hearts out winning their singles in 3 setters.

WA is now 8/6 ahead after wins in MXD by both twins and their partners.  There has been many 3 setters some going WA's way and some SA's way.

Alicia and Ryan survived another 3 setter in their mix to bring WA closer to a bronze. Jasmin and Janice with their partners Sunyee and Jason confirmed the bronze for WA with their 2 sets wins.

The final score was 10/6 in WA's favour.

There had been a few times that SA has grabbed bronze from WA to the dismay of Ryan Tan and the Tan twins.

Today Ryan and the twins get their first state medal after many brave attempts and never giving up. Their courage and their parent's support have seen them triumphant. As for Marcus, I think this is his first state team and his first medal. Congrats all.

All the players gave everything for WA and the president and umpire Lily Buttrose must be very proud of her young charges.

This may also be a first state team medal for manager Sok Teoh. Good on him and his support for his children.

Ryan Lin has done a great job keeping the team motivated in the absence of their coach Yuli who could not travel.

Now they have to prepare for the individual events.

KC is seeded 2nd in singles and 1st in doubles with his mixed and doubles playing with Kelly Xu and Peter Yan.  Jason is seeded 4th in singles. He has improved so much.

Jason and Sunyee are seeded 2nd in doubles. Good luck boys.

Just had a look at the draw and was surprised to see a WA under 15s National champ Johny Kok taking part in the singles. Good luck Johny.

Good luck girls too.
